Peerless Wyatt, Fearless Fleet headline Day Two HighlightsBy Rich Gonzalez Editor, DyeStatCal.com (WALNUT, Ca.) -- It was only fitting that Reggie Wyatt competed against collegians and post-collegians on Saturday. After all, he is proving to be without peer on the high school scene. And it was only fitting that Mac Fleet was the aggressor in charging into the state meet title favorite across four laps. After all, his key to success against Elias Gedyon might be in creating the moment rather than reacting to it. Wyatt and Fleet, the two biggest boys names on the California track and field scene, roared into the spotlight at Saturday's final day of action at the 51st Annual Mt. SAC Relays, a two-day prep affair which saw three new nation-leading marks, six new state leaders and over 430 DyeStatCalElite marks. The day's other big highlight came in the girls distance medley relay, where Dana Hills smoked into the national lead with one of the fastest performances in state history in a meet where more than 225 high schools and 2,500-plus athletes took part. "I'm still thinking about (missing the 300-meter hurdles record) at Arcadia (last week)," said Wyatt, the La Sierra senior who had a flawed start and then chopped his stride on the final four hurdles in his unsuccessful bid at breaking Jeshua Anderson's all-time prep standard at the Arcadia Invitational seven days prior. But Wyatt arrived at Mt. SAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium focused on a new challenge -- one he expects to undertake all the way to the California state meet: tackling the open 400-meter dash as well. Competing in the university/open heat of the 400m, Wyatt impressively loped home in a nation-leading 46.38 performance for the one-lap sprint that sent a fast message to his in-state rivals: they are now the underdogs. La Sierra head coach Will Jacobsmeyer confirmed that the plan is for Wyatt to at least double in the 300IH and the 400 throughout CIF, and perhaps undertake some long relay duty as well. "All he's concerned with at CIF is scoring points for the team," Jacobsmeyer noted. "He wanted the national record at Arcadia, but when he had the bad start in that race it put a crimp in his plans. For now, he just wants to score to help the team, and if the record comes, it comes. But he'll go for the record later. After state, the USC-bound phenom might take two more stabs at the hurdles record if it still eludes him, with those bids possibly coming at the Golden West Invitational in Northern California and the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico. Then he aims to focus on the open 400 at Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina, looking for a time of at least the high 45s. "I tease him that as unbelievably talented as he is, he still doesn't even have the school record in the 400," laughed Jacobs- meyer, referring to former Olympian Tyree Washington, who also attended La Sierra. "Reggie the absolutely nicest kid around, so I truly hope he achieves all of his goals; he deserves it." Wyatt, who finished second in the open race to the 45.80 posted by David Gillick of the United Kingdom, should have the strength necessary to pull off the 400-300 IH double in postseason. The two events are separated by 80 minutes on Friday's prelims of the state meet schedule, with the separation being an hour in Saturday's finals. Wyatt posted nation-leading marks in each of the events while competing only 40 minutes apart at the Mt. Carmel Invitational three weeks ago. "He ran 1:55 for the 800 in an all-comers in February and he's in much better shape now,' added Jacobsmeyer about Wyatt, who sustained an ankle sprain while playing pickup basketball during the offseason. That injury prompted the decision the forego also doing the high hurdles this spring. "He may also do the 4x4... we're still assessing the talent around him to see if we're strong enough there," the coach added. Mac Fleet sure has the strength these days. The University City senior gave a mini-clinic in race bravado on Saturday, quickly surging from seventh to first in the first lap of the anchor leg on the boys distance medley, erasing the deficit he inherited thanks to a loaded race field that boasted four of the nation's top eight seasonal times coming in. Fleet reeled in the likes of Loyola's Elias Gedyon, Upland's Tyler Brady and others to post a mind-blowing 4:04.8 anchor in closing out Uni's stunning 10:04.43 effort that left them just shy of the San Diego County record 10:04.12 set by Evan Fox-led West Hills at the 2000 Arcadia Invitational. The mark was also the #2 time in the nation this year (to Dana Hills' 10:01.50 last weekend), with Upland at 10:06.43 (4:07.3 anchor for Brady) and Loyola at 10:07.67 (4:08.2 anchor for Gedyon) recording the third- and fourth-fastest times in the land this spring with California now owning 10 of the 13 fastest times in the land in 2009. The key to the fast times came early, with Rancho Buena Vista's Colin Jarvis and Crescenta Valley's Zack Torres battling on the 1200m leadoff leg. That brought the whole pack out quickly is setting the pace for a slew of hot times. But without the outcome still in doubt, it was Fleet's bold move in the first 300m of his anchor leg which threw down a challenge that his rivals chose not to answer. With Fleet approaching the red zone after nailing his first lap in a 60-second clip, it was a chance for others to try throwing in their own surge to see if Fleet would break. Instead, they respected his brisk pace. Soon, the benefits of Fleet's steady dose of mileage and quality workouts reaped dividends as he handled the discomfort and soon found himself in a mental groove with less and less distance to go. opportunity had now dissipated for all others and Fleet outlasted the late kickers to hold on for the win. Fleet, Gedyon and Brady will likely be three main combatants in the quest for the 1600m state title, with Fleet noting he would only revert back to the 800m if he threw down a substantially faster (well under 1:50) two-lap time in the next couple of weeks. Gedyon, who initially was targeted to pursue the 800, had his coach leaning toward the 1600 in recent weeks after repeated breakthroughs. Brady, easily the most improved of the trio, might heep his options open longer. Dana Hills came in as the dangerous threat in the girls distance medley relay, with the crew blasting out of the gates quickly and eventually outlasting Southern California nemesis Torrey Pines of San Diego, the same result as in the California state meet in cross-country. The Dolphins had secured the lead by the end of the opening leg, with Alaina Alvarez outdueling Torrey Pines' Ali Billmeyer. The Dolphins closed out the win thanks to a fine 4:57.4 anchor carry by Heather Balbier to keep Megan Morgan and Torrey Pines at bay with an 11:47.39 to 11:56.05 triumph, the top two times in the nation this season. Other state-leading marks to occur on Saturday were Eleanor Roosevelt of Corona's dazzling 3:16.05 in winning the boys 1600-meter relay, St. Mary's Academy (46.12) edging Southern Section Division IV rival Gardena Serra (46.19) in the girls' 400-meter relay and Moorpark's Maxwell Dyce zipping to a swift 10.51 (wind = 0.0 mps) in the boys' 100-meter dash. Hot temperatures estimated to be at least in the mid-80s fueled a great climate for fast sprint times although the 15-hour time schedule from the day's first high school event to the last seemed to take a toll on some kids. The meet concluded at nearly 11 p.m. with the high school boys 4x400-meter relays. The day's action began with an unattached hammer competition comprised of athletes still in high school. Conor McCullough of Chaminade threw the 12-pound hammer with great success, achievig the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 11th longest throws in history amid a super series that went 243-08, 253-04, 255-03, 252-05, 256-09, and 250-03. FRIDAY RECAP: Absolutely perfect weather conditions provided the environment for some great distance times and the crews from Dana Hills on the boys side and Saugus on the girls' side seized the opportunity in the first of two days of high school action at the 51st Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Dana Hills, already the national leader for 2009 in both the 4x800 and the 4xMile, improved their mark in the former with a sensational 7:40.30 clocking that ranks as second-fastest in California history, trailing only the Don Lugo quartet that ripped 7:38.31 in 2000. Cole Guerin led off the Dolphins' effort with a fine 1:57.3 split for 800, with Zak Phillips then opening up ground on the competition via his 1:54.9 carry that set it up for a stellar close by the Valdes Twins. Tyler Valdes reportedly carried on the third leg and his 1:54.4 split put Dana Hills comfortably ahead, setting the table for Ryan Valdes on anchor, who toured the final two laps in 1:53.9. Most of the individual distance races got off to uncharacteristically slow starts, with negative-split efforts needed to ice the wins for Rancho Buena Vista's Colin Jarvis (lifetime outdoor best 4:14.19 for 1600m) and Bakersfield Foothill's Chris Schwartz (9:12.57 for 3200). The boys 4x1600m relay was an especially entertaining affair that netted five of the nation's top ten times in the event this spring. Valencia of Placentia, Roosevelt of Corona, Arcadia and Loyola traded off the lead, with Loyola prevailing as sophomore star Elias Gedyon closed in a 4:12.6 anchor. Arcadia sophomore Amar Moussa, also running the final leg, repeatedly tried to chase down Gedyon over the final two laps and also was timed in 4:12 and change for the 1600m split. The best high school mark on the girls side came early in the day as Mira Costa HS senior Kevyn Murphy, who is not competing for the school team this year, placed seventh in her section of the 1500-meter run. Murphy, who will attend Arizona State in the fall, was positioned between fifth and eighth for much of the race and finished in 4:37.12, the #2 high school time in the nation this year (behind Oregon's Kayleigh Tyerman, 4:36.36). Murphy, competing for the See Jane Run Track Club, begin to fade slightly with 300 meters to go, but then closed with a solid burst down the home stretch to close out her strong effort. | 1 | Davis, Carlyle | | Malborough | 5:02.46 | | 2 | Walles, Jackie | 11 | Venice | 5:05.97 | | 3 | Yang, Julia | 09 | Westview (san Di | 5:06.01 | | 4 | Hernando, Danielle | 10 | Saugus | 5:06.55 | | 5 | Laurent, Michaelanne | 12 | Corona | 5:06.95 | | 6 | Telon, Melissa | | Rancho Cucamonga | 5:07.43 | | 7 | Guadiana, Olivia | | Ventura | 5:07.72 | | 8 | Tippets, Kelsi | 11 | Martin L.
