CIF-Southern Section 2008 Cross-Country Preseason Divisional Team Rankings
***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*** (Released Monday-p.m., September 8, 2008)
By Rich Gonzalez, DyeStatCal Editor (LOS ALAMITOS, Ca.) – Nationally ranked squads from Dana Hills (boys) and Saugus (girls) are among six teams that won CIF-Southern Section titles a year ago and are favored to repeat as team champions in 2008, according to the preseason polls released today. Dana Hills, which emerged victorious among the deepest and fastest set of finalist squads in Southern Section history last fall, returns four varsity performers and the top junior varsity squad in the state to enter the season ranked #1 in Division I. Additionally, the Dolphins open the season as the #2 team in the nation (to North Central HS of Washington), according to The Harrier Magazine’s preseason rankings. Boys’ teams also starting the season ranked atop their respective divisions are Loyola in Division II, Barstow in Division III, Laguna Beach in Division IV and Woodcrest Christian in Division V. Loyola, Barstow and Woodcrest Christian enter the season as defending champions while Nordhoff won the Division IV crown a year ago. On the girls’ side, the big news is the relocation of Saugus from Division I to Division II during the CIF-SS off-season divisional realignment shakeup. Saugus, the runaway champions and team-time course record setters at both CIF-SS Finals and the state meet a year ago, are the heavy favorites in Division II this fall as four athletes return from that highly decorated roster and are joined by a superb freshmen class. The Centurions are ranked third in the nation by The Harrier. The realignments also made an impact in Division III, where Foothill of Santa Ana – formerly a Division II school – moves in and assumes the top spot in the preseason poll. Foothill’s upside recently was impacted by the transfer addition of all-state candidate Sierra Vega from Chaparral of Temecula. Dana Hills (Division I), La Reina (Division IV) and Woodcrest Christian (Division V) are the other top-ranked teams in their respective divisions on the girls’ side. Woodcrest Christian and the aforementioned Saugus squad are the only preseason #1 teams on the girls’ side to have won a Southern Section team title last year. The high school cross-country season kicks off throughout the Southland this week and culminates with the CIF-SS Finals on November 22nd at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut and the CIF-State Championships on November 29th at Woodward Park in Fresno. For results and newsmakers throughout the season, log on to www.DyeStatCal.com
