Meeting of the Maruaders Saturday, August 29, 2009 @ Hoffman Park (SJS) 2.70 miles (warm at race time - projected high of 97 later in the day
| | Rich Gonzalez Editor, DyeStatCal (August 29, 2009) -- For college basketball across the country, they call in Midnight Madness. For cross-country in Carmichael, they simply term it "Meeting of the Marauders." Call it what you want, the translation's the same: Excitement builds as the season is almost here. A time-honored tradition for perhaps California's most storied program, the newest version of "Meeting of the Marauders" played out on what later promised to be a very hot day as this year's Jesuit High School cross-country runners attacked Hoffman Park for the first steps of their 2009 season. Temperatures forecast as high as 97 degrees later in the day appeared not to hinder this gathering, which saw Adam Kelly-Strong at the front end of a strong veteran showing. Kelly-Strong, who led the Marauders to a Top 10 state meet finish in 2008, was the frontrunner again here by finishing 39 seconds clear of his next teammate, T.J. Brown-Pinizzotto. A few "new" names to the possible varsity roster added were reason for promise. Danny Diaz, a 4:53 performer for 1600m in track, showed well to finish third overall (all rades ran together in a single race) in 14:44. Other notable breakthroughs came from senior Andy Farris, who closed out the top-five scoring, and sophomore Luke Gary, who we'd heard good things on in recent days. Farris did not break 2:09 for 800 meters in track, but was very impressive in the cross-country challenge here, perhaps signaling a fine summer of training. Gary, who had a best of 11:07 for 3200 meters on the track last year as a ninth grader, ripped 14:54 here to place sixth overall. Depth might be even better for the Marauders than in years past!
