Some great action, led by the latest addition to the State’s powerful group of Division I schools, Oak Ridge (moved to that level from D2 this week by the Sac Joaquin Section) highlighted the annual Willow Hills Relays at the Reservoir next to Folsom High School.  The Oak Ridge Boys five person 5k relay totalled 84:54, breaking their own Course Record by four and a half minutes, with the Girls from OR breaking their 2008 CR 104:57 with a 103:03 run this day.  Interestingly, the Jesuit Boys ran the Open 5k race that was held in conjunction with the relay, with Adam Kelly-Strong blazing the day’s quickest clocking 16:19, with his team taking nine of the first ten places in that event and totalling 84:17 as a team when 1-5 were added up, only allowing Nick Read of Colfax in at sixth as the Marauders showed impressive depth, gapping 50 seconds between second finisher TJ Brown-Pinzotto (16:41) and tenth placer Justin Brown (17:31).   The 1 thrugh 5 team member relay situation has squads spread out all over the course as runners run their individual legs, with some advantage to a team that runs all together in the Open event at the same time.  It would have been an interesting relay confrontation if Jesuit had raced there with Oak Ridge.

The very tough Oak Ridge squads dominated the relay events, with the Boys squad smarting from a race in the Section Finals last year Division II that had them fail to quality for State, and the Girls, seventh in last year’s State Meet D2 with everyone returning, making both squads very, very strong.   Davis dominated last year’s Sac Joaquin Division I Finals with 36 points (Boys) and 40 (Girls), with Oak Ridge hoping to move up locally to challenge that perennial champions with their new divisional placement.

PREVIEW - Doug Speck Editor DyeStatCal -

The annual Willow Hills Relays, at the traditional Section Finals course next to Folsom HS, will bring some quality powers for the 5-person teams with 5k segments run consecutively, relays style.

With the Section coming out with its early CBED report, Oak Ridge has jumped from Division II to Division I, with the powerhouse down the road facing the “Big Boys and Girls,” come championship time.  They should fare nicely, with some good competition here with everyone combined in one division.  The Oak Ridge Girls took the title last year in a Meet Record 104:57, with the crew loaded in 2009, a dynamite track season just behind the strong seven varsity runners.  Del Campo took the Boys’ title in 2008 with a Meet Record 89:24 over Oak Ridge’s 89:57, the duo strong once again, Amjed Aboukhadijeh leading a powerful OR crew and Rober Pflasterer leading a Del Campo group that had a fine spring track season.  Adam Kelly-Strong led the always powerful Jesuit group during their “Meeting of the Marauders” time trial, with some new faced showing up in scoring positions there for the traditional power.  Ponderosa's Boys showed some promise with a win in the Delta Kings Invitational last weekend of August in Stockton.

It should be a good day of action with runners eventually spread out over the Willow Hills course as their relay teams compete.
