Day's Summary by Mike Kennedy
On a very formful day, the vast majority of the teams that were supposed to qualify for the section finals did just that. Of the top 130 seeded teams spread over 10 divisions just five boys teams and five girls teams failed to advance to the finals next Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College beginning at 7:45 a.m.
In boys Division I, it was No. 10 ranked Valley View, failed to qualify by just one point when it finished fifth behind California, 152-153. In Division III, No. 8 ranked Lompoc Cabrillo finished ninth in heat two. In Division IV, No. 12 ranked Nordhoff, finished ninth in heat one to miss advancing by one place. In Division V, No. 9 ranked Chadwick and No. 13 ranked Midland, both just missed being a time qualifiers losing out to Viewpoint. The girls Division I,  No. 8   Crescenta Valley in heat one, running without its No. 1 runner, who had not run the last two weeks, was fifth with 137 points, 17 behind Long Beach Poly. In Division II, arguably the toughest of the five divisions, No. 12 ranked Edison and No. 13 Irvine finished, just behind the four automatic qualifiers. In Division IV No. 7 ranked Morro Bay lost out as a time qualifier to Bishop Montgomery, 107:15 to 107:46.
A number of teams not ranked in the top 13, really stepped up to qualify. In boys Division I, Troy finished second in its heat and California was third in its heat. Division II saw Ventura and Ayala both finishing second in their heats and Oakwood qualifying third in its heat. In girls Division I, Fountain Valley was second in its heat and Los Alamitos was third in its heat. In Division II, Arroyo Grande and Thousand Oaks both were third in their heats and in Division III San Luis Obispo was second in its heat.
In may most cases the leading teams and individuals were on cruise control but that did not mean there were not some outstanding performances. In boys  Division I the heat winners were Arcadia, 77:43, Trabuco Hills, 77:44, Royal 78:09 and Dana Hills at 78:21. Glendora had the best time in Division II at 78:43, Golden Valley had the fastest time in Division III at 79:20, Harvard-Westlake had the best time in Division IV at 83:01 and Woodcrest Christian had the fastest time at 84:17. Blake Hofmeister of Laguna Beach edged Fabian Velasco of Duarte in heat one of Division IV as both were timed in 15:50 and Andrew Garcia of Nipomo was first in heat two with James Shipe of Morro Bay second with both being timed in 15:51. Junior Will Callan of Thacher had the fastest time in Division V with a 16:00.
