Arkansas Head Track, Cross Country Coach McDonnell Expected To Retire

McDonnell Has Won More National Championships Than Any Other NCAA Coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Arkansas will hold a press conference at 4 pm. Monday at the Broyles Center on the U of A campus for a “major announcement pertaining to Arkansas head cross country and track and field head coach John McDonnell and the future of the University of Arkansas men’s track and field program,” according to a press release sent out by the university Monday morning.

It is widely expected that McDonnell, 69, will announce his retirement as head coach of the track and cross country programs at Arkansas.

McDonnell's track and cross country teams have won 42 NCAA national championships. According to the University of Arkansas, only four NCAA institutions have won more than 42 men’s national championships: Southern California (72), UCLA (69), Stanford (57) and Oklahoma State (46). They are the only schools whose entire men’s athletic programs have won more than McDonnell’s track and cross country teams.

McDonnell has been the UA track and cross country coach since 1972.

4029tv.com will show a livestream of the announcement at 4 p.m. CDT.
