Junior Olympics to begin Tuesday in Miami
7-28-2003

MIAMI – The Verizon Athletes of the Meet from the 2003 USATF Youth Athletics Championships in Buffalo, Courtney Champion and Michael Grant of Georgia, are among the top entrants at the 2003 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.

The Junior Olympic Championships get under way Tuesday at Tropical Stadium in Miami at 8 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, and continue through August 3. They are the third stop on USA Track & Field’s 2003 Verizon Youth Series.

A two-time World Youth Championships 200m silver medalist, Grant is a favorite in the young men’s sprints, while Champion is a strong favorite in the young women’s 200. Alandra Sherman, the 2003 Pan American Junior Championships 100m hurdles silver medalist, will add star power to the young women’s hurdles and sprints.

Also scheduled to compete is national high school record holder Kira Kosta (13 feet, 8.5 inches), who is fresh off a bronze-medal performance in the pole vault at the 2003 Pan American Junior Championships and a runner-up finish at the 2003 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month at Stanford.

The 2003 Pan American Junior Championships gold medalist, Michelle Carter is the top entrant in the throwing events. The University of Texas-bound Carter in May set the national high school record with her throw of 16.73 meters/54 feet, 10.75 inches at the Texas State high school championships.

In cooperation with i2sports.com, the 2003 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships also will be webcast live on www.usatf.org.
