Team USA members shine on Day 4 of Junior Olympics
8-1-2003

MIAMI – Performances by Team USA members and national records in the pole vault and javelin throw highlighted the fourth day at the 2003 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships at Tropical Park in Miami, Florida. The meet is the third stop on USA Track & Field’s 2003 Verizon Youth Series.

In the day’s top record-setting performances, April Kubishta of the Havasu Harriers (Arizona) cleared 3.85m/12-7.50 to set a national youth record in the young women’s pole vault bettering Elizabeth Boyle’s 3.84m/12-7.25 set in 2001. Ron Baker of the Utica Track Club threw 39.39m/129-03 to set a national youth record in the bantam boys javelin throw bettering Matthew Kosecki’s 37.46m/122-11 set in 2001.

Jessica Trujillo and Tori Allen, who competed for Team USA at the 2003 World Youth Championships, placed first and second in the intermediate girls’ pole vault. The 16-year-old Trujillo, from Arlington, Texas, cleared 3.60m/11-9.75 to win before taking unsuccessful attempts at the meet national youth record of 3.80m/12.5-5. “I was so pumped to go straight to 12-5.50 after clearing 11-9 on my first attempt. I wanted the record so bad,” said Trujillo. “I had a problem pushing the pole away on my release. This is a great way to finish my season after not doing so well at World Youth.” Allen, who just celebrated her 15th birthday two days ago, said her goal coming into the meet is have her name in the record books in the age groups she has competed. “I am little disappointed with the outcome today, but I am young and will be back to break the record next year,” said Allen. The 2002 X Games speed rock-climbing champion cleared 3.45m/11-3.75.

The pole vaulting duo’s World Youth teammate, Gayle Hunter leaped 5.84m/19-2 in the young women’s long jump to add another crown to her 2003 Junior Olympic heptathlon title. Hunter of the West Valley Eagles (Calif.) was the runner-up in young women’s triple jump Thursday afternoon. “I wanted to jump at least 19-8, but I am happy with the win,” said Hunter. “I needed to extend my legs more after my takeoff.” Angela Jenkins won the intermediate girls long jump with a mark of 5.80m/19-0.50.

Another World Youth competitor, Francois Gatson, leaped 14.43m/47-4.25 to win intermediate boys triple jump. On Thursday Gatson was the runner-up in the intermediate boys’ long jump.

Paul Hubbard of Speed Inc. track club leaped 15.38m/50-5.50 to win the young men’s triple jump. Lazaris Evans of Quicksilver was the runner-up with a leap of 15.18m/49-9.75 while Team USA member from the Pan American Junior Championships Devon Fanfair leaped 15.00m/49-2.50 to place third.
