Men’s Shot Put, qualifying

This sport, friends, is not professional wrestling. Results happen when athletes surpass or do not surpass, as the day, circumstances or injuries woudl indicate.

Manuel Martinez, one of the best shot putters in the world, did not quality. He was not happy. He said, “ I have no explanation for my performance. . I did not qualify for the final. I am sorry for all the people who supported me here. I do not really who supported me here. I do not really know what happenedl It felt like there wa a bad spell over me.”

John Godina lead the qualifying with a first round qualifier of 21.08 meters, which was also
a seasonal best for John. Andrei Mkhnevich of Belarus was second in 20.89, with Yuriy Bilong third in 20.84. Topa Reinikainene had a seasonal best of 20.55 for fourth best qualifier. Kevin Toth threw 20.39 to be the fifth qualifier and Adam Nelson was the ninth
qualifier. Both Kevin and John qualified on their first throws, while Adam needed three throws to qualify.

Britian’s Carl Myerscough, the number two thrower in the world this year, threw only 19.51m-1.42 short of the new UK record that he threw earlier in the year. His second round was 18.51 and his third round was a foul. He was the second of two favorites who did not move on.

Final of men’s shot put will be held in the evening session today, August 23, 2003.

Men’s 1500m qualifying

First round in the 1,500 and guess what-an American did not run stupidly. Jason Lunn ran a smart and made a 53 last lap after a pedestrian 64, 2.09 at 800 and 3.08 for 1200 meters. This one was led by Spains’ Reyes Estevez, who looked a bit soft at the end of the race. I was so proud of Lunn, who stayed out of trouble, and showed and showed the poise to
run with the Big Boys. He could be a factor if he keeps his head about him.

Hicham El Guerrouj showed the class of field and controlled his race, winning the second fastest round. Kevin Sullivan is rounding into form after some mid season injuries and qualified as the last qualifier in a fast heat.

The runner who looks best, in my mind is Rui Silva of Portugal, who has that Fermin Cacho, I can run with anyone kind of finish. El G has to be careful, but his double gold shot looked better after Bernard Lagat pulled out of the 5,000 meters.

Official Results - SHOT PUT - Men - Final

Men’s Shot Final-It’s Andrei Mikhnevich of Belarus

In one of his first competitions after a drug suspension, Andrei Mikhevich had the three farthest throws-21.69, 21.45 and 21.44-any of the three that would have won. Adam Nelson of the U.S. in a difficult season, took second in 21.26 on his fourth throw-the fourth time Adam has had a second place finish in a major championship. Third place was Yuriy Bilonog who threw 21.10 in third round. Kevin Toth, who has the longest throw of the year, just did not have it today, with only one fair throw, his first.

John Godina had a nightmere performance. His first throw was a mess, and his second throw of 19.84 put him in ninth. A third round throw, which looked 20 plus meters, was ruled a foul. In my opinion, with the replay in front of me, it was the wrong call.

Women’s 100 meters, qualifying rounds 1

One of the moments that many in the stadium enjoy is when a runner from a newly recognized country puts in a good effort, finishes well back in the field and makes history as their countries’ first finisher or only representative. I do understand, being one of those global village kind of guys myself, that we tend to overemphasize medals and performances. It should be noted that at least 150 of the 203 coutnries with teams in Paris will not come within a mile of a medal for their countries. Therefore, Courir, Lancer et Sauter, or Rum, Throw, Jump-the joy of competition, of a performance well run needs to be appreciated.

First three in each heat, plus 8 fastest times...

In light of those thoughtful comments, USATF Communications czarina Jill Geer, a former 400m runner at Arkansas, has the uncanny abilty to pick the last finisher’s time. The young women from Nirumbi ran 14.33-and Geer picked 14.3-a hand time, but, she’s from a small town in Wisconsin, so be nice.

Chandra Stirrup won the first race, which featured a runner from American Samoa who ran 14.33 and Nirumbi, who ran 14.07. Chandra ran 11.07 and looked quite impressive.

Torri Edwards looked good in her heat with a 11.08. The runner from Kiribati ran 14.34. Anyone who can tell me what countries are around Kiribati, I will give the winner a free American Track & Field HAT--email me your answer to stanederjr@aol.com, subject line “ where the hell is kiribati”.

Kelli White, in heat three, ran a controlled race, and moved on Kelli told ATF that she has chronic plantar fascia problems. Kelli White and Merlene Ottey, now representing Slovakia and all of 42, ran 11.26.

One of the most amazing moments was the young women from Afghanistan, one of two representatives from her country. The young women ran in sweats and was being taught how to use the blocks. A very articulate and patient young women, she endured nearly 30 minutes of questioning (she ran in 18.37), about how it felt to run the world championships.
It was the first time that she, ( Lima Azimi) had not only left her country, but she had never left her city. Lima is 23. Obviously much more for such a young women to deal with besides sprinting. A very modest women, she was not comfortable outside of home with a short sleeve shirt.

Lima Azimi represented her country quite well, showing the modesty that is part of her culture, a pride for her country and patience that anyone who has endurred constant uneducated questions from a press corps that sometimes was less interested in this young women’s real story than in creating something from their world view.

In heat five, Ekaterina Thenou, from Greece, ran 11.09, and looked quite good.

Want to hear a French crowd yell, watch them applaud Christine Arron, the former European champion. In heat 7, it was Gail Devers from Etats-Unis and Christine Arron from Le France. Devers and Arron were out, with Devers clearly in the lead, with Arron making a nice move, showing a new gear, and taking the heat in 11.15. Arron looks to be in form, and could be a factor in the final.

First of all, Stacy Dragila made it. She was smart and came in at 4.25m and cleared 4.35 as well as the auto qualifier of 4.40m-the final clearance was on the second vault. The U.S. ‘s Mary Sauer also qualified with a nice jump at 4.35m. Jillian Schwartz, who broke her pole on her second attempt at 4.35, did not recover and will not go on.

The Russian vaulters, Yelena Isinbayeva, Svetlana Feofanova and BelYakova all qualified. Feofanova waited til 4.35 and cleared that height as well as 4.40m. WR holder Isinbayeva took the conservative approach, clearing 4.25, 4.35 and 4.40 on first attempts by very wide margins. Bel Yakova cleared 4.40 on her third attempt.

The final is to be held on Monday night.

Women’s 100m, second round

Chandra Stirrup dusted Gail Devers in this round, with a nice 10.98. Christine Arron of France kept them happy in Stade de France with an 11.07. But the fastest 100m of all this round was Kelli White, who had a perfect start and just kept going, running 10.96 and looking very tough.

Women’s 10,00m final

This was, in my opinion, the BEST EVER 10,000m by women, period. A race where
the top women went through the 5k in 15.04! And then, they got faster! Get a beverage sports fans, because this was a race!

The race went off pretty swiftly, with 1k in 3.01, 2k in 6.03, 3k in 9.4, and 4k in11.59. The Ethiopian crew of Adere Berhane, Kidane Werkesh and Derartu Tulu were joined by China’s Sun Yingie and the Netherland’s Lornah Kiplagat.

The top pack had the race in control, when at 2400 meters, Sun Yingie, and her any arm movement and I might look alive style took the lead. Running like a metronome,
Yingie, who has lead two Boston Marathons through over halfway with her distinctive
style, ran 71-73s through 5k, hit in 15.04. Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands took the lead and Adere Berhane and Kidane Werknesh and Derartu Tulu in close attendance. Sun Yingie was there too. This race was very competitive. Lornah looked very smooth when she took the lead, where she was the leader between 6k and 8k. Sun YIngie, even with her dorky form, was fit and relaxed. At 7 k, Tulu walked off the track!

Now the race got interesting...Berhane, Werknesh and Kiplagat were so close that you could have not put an envelope between them. All these runners were working hard, and then it got really tough. At 9400 meters, Sun Yingie of China made a HUGE move and the race looked in doubt for the Ethiopian due, as Lornah Kiplagat fell back, just a bit.

With about 600 meters to go, Adere Berhane took off, with Sun Yingie in close pursuit, and Werknesh Kidane trying valiantly to get third place and Lornah Kiplagat gamely hanging on to fourth. Berhane was in full flight, her knees lifting and her arms in full use, and Berhane had her race-with 200 to go, she put four seconds on the duof of Kidane and Yingie. It was in the last 50 meters that Werknesh Kidane made it 1,2 for Ethiopia.

But the race belongs to Adere Berhane, who ran 30.04.18 to set a new Championship record. Werknesh Kidane was second in 30.07.15 and a personal best. Sun YIngie of China was third in 30.07.20 and a pesonal best. Lornah Kipllagat was rewarded with a NR in 30.12.53. Fifth palce was Russia’s Alla Zhilayeva in a Russian NR of 30.23.08. Russian
Galina Boomolvoa ran 30.26;20 for a PB in seventh. China’s Huina Xing took 8th in 30.31.55, a new world junior record in eighth place. In ninth, Benita Johnson of Australia set an NR in 30.37.68, Ejagehu Dibaba of Ethiopia was tenth in 31.01.07, a personal best, Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia was tenth in 31.06.14, a Latvian NR. In eleventh, Kayoko Fukoshi of Japan was 11th in 31.10.57 a seasonal best, and Deena Drossin ran a season best of 31.17.86 in 12th place. Through fifteenth place, all of the women either set national records, pbs or seasonal bests-that, my friends is a race.

The crowd of 45,000 tonight was into all of the finishers, but the gang of five was very exciting! A great 10,000 meters ended a super night of track and field. What will happen later this week!
