Men's 400m semi finals
Jerome Young and Calvin Harrison, in heat 1, ran a smart race, and were
controlled at 200 meters. At 300 meters, they began to roll and Young
ran a seasonal best of 44.7 with Harrison right behind them at 44.7.
Eric Milazar of Mauritania ran 44.7 and Aleyen Francique of Grenada ran
44.8 to move on.
Tyree Washington won the second heat in 44.60, with Leslie Dihone of
France, who came from fifth to second over the last fifty meters, ran
45.02 to move on.
But it was the third heat, that will provide some thought for people-Marc
Raquil of France, came from way back, in fifth at least, and ran 44.88,
all in the last thirty meters, to take first over Micheal Blackwood of
Jamaica. Watch this runner, as he could make it a very tough go for silver
or bronze. He might actually steal this race, as the crowd went nuts
when he moved.
It could take a sub 44 to win this thing....

Mens 100 meters, quarter finals
And then it got really, really weird....
Quarter 1
Tim Montgomery continued to round into racing shape, with a 10.04 time,
just ahead of a hard charging Bernard Williams, who ran 10.12.
Quarter 2
Here is how it got strange. There was a false start, called on the field,
which is the IAAF rule, not the USATF rule. The sprinters got into their
blocks and a false start was called again. It looked to me as if Asafa
Powell, from Jamaica in lane five was the culprit, with a reaction time
of .086. Now remember, only God can do a legal start under 0.1. That
means that sprinters are anticipating the gun. Which is what they do,
sometimes they get caught and sometimes they win medals or at least,
races.
The red card was given to Asafa, but that was AFTER Jon Drummond recieved
a red card. None of us had seen Jon move, and this is some serious track
geeks here. But Drummond was given a time of .052 as a reaction time
from the Seiko timing equipment.
Jon Drummond layed down in his lane, after he argued with the judge,
who did not look at him. The crowd went on Drummond's side and as he
layed down, the crowd booed. No one would take charge. No IAAF official
did anything but show him the red card, as Drummond, who I believe was
theatrical, but quite serious about his perception of his race, was fighting
for his life.
He was respectful at first, but then it got a bit strange. This debacle
took over 60 minutes, and after 31 minutes and the crowd booing and the
cameras showing former IOC Presidente Samaranch in the crowd, the rest
of the sprinters in his heat walk off the field!
I would have killed to hear what was happening in the IAAF Dept rooms,
but Drummond accepted the judgment. He gave us a statement, " I
flinched, the guy next to me flinched, and another guy flinched. I did't
understand the rule to mean that a flinch is a false start. I protested
because this is my livelihood. At this point in my career, for me to
lose an opportunity to pursue a dream, it crushes me. I walked away from
what i had worked for the whole year."
My take on this--Jon did move, but the machine must be set up to quantify
stomach gases-there needs to be a human element in this and this was
handled by all concerned in a less than professional fashion... I can
see the french papers now...

Men's 10,000 meters
There are great runners, and then, there are iconic runners. Haile Gebreslassie
of Ethiopia is an iconic runner. I have seen each of his world championship
10k runs since 1995, and am proud to say that this is was the most exciting
and competitive race that I have ever seen. It was the first time I have
seen someone go under 13 minutes for 5k, and that was in the second half!
Meb Keflezighi of the U.S. led the 10k in 2.52.01, and was still in
the lead at 2000 meters, which he hit in 5:36.76 ( a second 1k in 2.44.75)
with Dieter Bauman of Germany urging him on. The pack was Haile Gebreselassie,
Bekele Kenenisa and Sihine Sileshi of Ethiopia, John Cheriout Korir,Salim
Kipsang and Wilbelforce Talel of Kenya with Ahmad Hassan of Qatar and
Kamiel Maase of the Netherlands in attendance.
In the second pack was Karl Keska of GBR, David Galvan of Mexico and
John Yuda of Tanzania, followed by Alan Culpepper of the U.S.
Salim Kipsand took the lead at 3k, with a 2.47.96 romp, hitting the
3k in 8.24.72, and that was the last time a non-Ethiopian led this race,
and actually, was a factor in this race. Bekele lead for the next kilometer,
running it in 2.46.05 and hitting the 4k mark in 11.10.77. It was then
that Haile Gebresalassie took to the fore and the race was on. Mr. G
took the field through the fastest 1k of the race, a 2.41.56, to hit
the 5k in 13.52.33 and you knew the race was on.
Gebresalassie ran the kilometer from five to six in 2.34.52 and it was
obvious, that the runners from Kenya, and Qatar were distressed, and
this was becoming a Ethiopia only show. To watch Gebresalassie up close
is to see distance perfection, and he gives his team no quarter-Bekele
and Sileshi worked hard, but G was making a huge run to break his competitors.
Mr. G hit 6k in 16.26.85 and then ran a 2.38.29 between six and seven
and the Kenyans went out the back door, and the crowd literally gasped...Gebresalssie
is very efficient, but to see Kenenisa Bekele running next to him, it
is the heroic and the inevitable. I tend to support the heroic, but Bekele
is at the top of his form, and while Mr. G is there too, he has to make
Bekele hurt terribly to break him.
And this is what Haile Gebreselassie did, first hitting 8k in 21.42.58,
( a kilo in 2.37.44), then hitting 9k in 24.20.56 ( a kilo in 2.37.98)
and Sihine Sileshi started to break.
By 9k, Gebresalassie was still in front, him arm carriage perfect, his
legs lifting and churning up the track and Kenenisa Bekele there, waiting
to pounce.
Haile Gebressalassie, who won World Champ 10ks in 95,97,99 and Olympics
in 96 and 00, hit the 9600m mark in 25.54-and the crowd was loud-Bekele
was at his shoulder, and that is where he stayed, until 200m to go and
he went by, on the outside. Mr. G did not stop, Bekele just kept moving,
completing the last lap in 55, to set a new World Championship record
of 26.49.57. Haile was rewarded with a seasonal best of 26.50.77 and
the silver and Sileshi Sihine had to take solace with the bronze and
a mediocre time of 27.01.44 ( it was not his seasonal best-oh my God!).
Ethiopia showed that they are the kings of the 10k. In analyzing the
race, it should be noted that the last 5k was run in 12.58!
The U.S.'s Alan Culpepper was 14th in 28.14.92, Meb Keflezegi was 16th
in 28.35.43 and Daniel Browne was 19th in 29.01.60.
Here is what the great ones said:
Kenenisa Bekele said " I am Haile's successor, and it is a wonderful
thing, and my victory is also for him. I am very thankful for the great
audience here today."
Haile Gebrselassie, " The most important thing tonight was to have
three Ethiopians on the podium. We had team tactics and obviously they
worked. I thought I had a good sprint left in me for the end, but Kenenisa
proved to be stronger."

Women's 400m hurdles
How this event has changed. I remember being in Goteborg, when Kim Batten
and Tonja Buford Bailey both broke the WR for the intermediate hurdles.
What a race! This has been a relatively depressing event for the US for
the past several years, but we look to have a nice crop of intermediate
hurdlers coming up. As I use to tell my athletes, the 400m has a certain
type of pain, but the intermediate hurdles requires someone who knows
that they are going to hurt and goes for the burn, PLUS has to hurdle-pretty
sick race.
Yuliya Pechonka of Russia lead the qualifying with 54.61, followed by
Sandra Glover of the US in 54.48 and Jana Pittman of Australia in 54.80.
Raasin McIntosh of the US ran 55.53 and Joana Hayes, also of the US,
who ran 56.10 also moved to the next round. To make the final, it will
take sub 55.00. To medal, will require a 53.5 or better. This one will
be tough.

White (far left) - Kirby Lee
Women's 100m Final
The crowd was focused, as Christine Arron was in the race, and the Women's
heptathlon was just finished, and an exciting men's 10k had just been
watched.
The starter, who has been having issues all night long, held the finalists
long enough for Gail Devers to raise her hand and get released from the
blocks.
All sprinters then returned, the starter did his job, and the race was
off. The best start of the race was Torri Edwards, who took off blazing,
and through 50 meters, it looked as if she just might surprise all. But
Kelli White, who had a good start, found another gear at 50m, made up
the disadvantage by 70m and ran a 10.85, blazing away from the field
to take her first gold medal at 100 meters!
Torri Edwards was rewarded with her race with a pb of 10.93 and the
silver medal. Zhanna Block, the 01 winner, ran a smart race and took
third in 10.99, a seasonal best. Chandra Sturrup, the women who many
thought would win, took fourth in 11.02-she just looked flat and did
not react to Kelli White's moves.
Christine Arron ran 11.06 in sixth and Gail Devers of the U.S. tok 8th
in 11.11, a seasonal best.
