EVENT 114 MEN'S DISCUS THROW 4:00 P.M.
In what has become among the signature events in recent years, the discus competition should be among the most hotly contested field events this weekend. A trio of 200-foot performers already headline the entry list here, with Floridian Wes Stockbarger (Charlotte HS, Punta Gorda, FL) going 202-8 as the nation's #2 returnee from a year ago, while California talents Eddie Cornell (Burroughs HS, Ridgecrest), a World Youth Games performer) at 201-6, and Daniel Schaerer (The Bishop School, La Jolla) at 200-6 recently, also beyond the 200-foot arc this spring. Washington's Nate Rolfe (Inglemoor HS) also ranks among the more experienced tossers here. Utah's Leif Arrhenius (209-6 a year ago), nursing a recent foot injury, could be a last-minute entrant.
EVENT 117 MEN'S LONG JUMP 5:30 P.M.
New Yorker Felipe Reyes (Christian Brothers Academy) is stamped as the clear favorite here, with the East Coast talent already stretching to a nation-leading 2004 indoor mark of 24-5 at the Hispanic Games in The Big Apple in mid-January. California State Leader David Clift (Pittsburg) 23-08, Joel Tuosto of Greenfield (23-2), 23-footer Tim Frazier (Claremont), and Andre Crenshaw of Antelope Valley (22-8.5w) are among the local talents set to crank it up here, when the big guns seem to start stepping up as we approach the championship phase of the season!
EVENT 119 MEN'S POLE VAULT 5:45 P.M.
Defending California state champion Ryan Shuler (Granite Bay HS), who stole the spotlight by winning the 2003 year-end title as only a 9th grader, tops the performance list here, already scaling 16 feet while a freshman. Local talent Dustin Deleo (Los Alamitos HS) improved his stock significantly with a recent 15-7.5 clearance in Southland competition, while Matt Tillinghast (Montgomery HS, Santa Rosa) 15-06.75, 15-6 stars Joshua Lubeck (Royal HS, Simi Valley) and Graeme Hoste (Claremont HS) and Matt Stevenson (Rancho Bernardo) help make up a super field!!
EVENT 121 MEN'S 4X100M RELAY INVITATIONAL 5:44 P.M.
Track action on the male side figures to get out to a scorching kickoff as super football talent Theo Ginn powers the great Glenville-based (Ohio) baton quartet into meet-opening action here. Glenvilla has the nucleus back from a super crew that clocked 41.0 last spring! Keep an eye out for USA Today Defensive Football Player of the Year, Ted Ginn, who is a 13.62 hurdler and headed to The Ohio State University to run and tackle people for the Buckeyes!!! Edison of Fresno, which ripped a special 42.32 effort a month ago, should be well along by now, trying to hold of the likes of Kenny O'Neal-anchored Oakland Skyline, a coming-around Long Beach Poly crew, and Southland sprint power Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks!
EVENT 128 MEN'S MILE RUN INVITATIONAL 6:13 P.M.
Washington's Laef Barnes, the most recent high-level performer produced from the fine Mead (Spokane) program, is the nation's top miler thus far in 2004, with a head-turning 4:09.61 indoor effort at the Husky Invite at the close of January. Training through in preparation for tonight's clash, look for Barnes to entertain strong challenges from Stanford Invite mile champ (4:12.98) Stephen Pottay (Galena, NV), New Yorker Bryan Scotland, plus leading California talents Troy Swier (4:11.59) and J.K. Withers (a breakthrough 4:10.7 effort in mid-March. Keep an eye on developing versatile junior class talent Joe Gatel (Edison HS, Huntington Beach), a 1:53.42, 4:13/9:13 performer.
EVENT 130 MEN'S 110M HIGH HURDLES INVITATIONAL 6:26 P.M.
Already littering the history books with age-group and by-grade national records, Kevin Craddock (James Logan HS, Union City) has been the carburetor powering California's finest program this spring. Craddock's 13.91 effort last summer tops the entry lists here, with San Diego talent Bryon Barner (Helix HS, La Mesa), San Gabriel Valley superstar Marquis Profit (from the fathomed and revitalized Muir HS program), Port Richmond star Saidu Ezike and Trabuco Hills power pack Brian Payne. Look for a great showdown here!
EVENT 131 MEN'S SHOT PUT 6:30 P.M.
It is Washington-area standout Matt Wauters (Bainbridge HS) who has already the 12-pound iron shot a whopping 64-6 in recent weeks to headline the impressive field of weight men here, with the Pacific Northwest talent primed to challenge for a spot in the meet's all-time Top 10 listing! UC Berkeley-bound putter Chad Smith (61-8) figured to be a prime challenger, but then the Arroyo Grande HS triumvirate of Stephen Field, Marc Lewis and Danny Rohr all uncorked 60-footers last weekend, believed to be a California first! Keep an eye on talented Rancho Cucamonga Junior Averill Spicer, just over 60 feet in the last few weeks!!
EVENT 136 MEN'S 100M DASH INVITATIONAL 6:45 P.M.
Batten down the hatches –– this could be a hot one!!! Floridian Xavier Carter has a foot injury, and will not be attending the competition. Northern California steamroller Kenny O'Neal (Oakland Skyline HS) who motored to a 10.40 legal clocking last summer leads this contest, , with the Notre Dame HS duo of Rodney Glass and Cary Harris, Granite Bay's Sam Stroughter, and Sir Francis Drake's Alex Pearlstone other hot entries!
EVENT 139 MEN'S 800M RUN INVITATIONAL 7:00 P.M.
Always among the most exciting events at Arcadia, this year's two-lap challenge is headlined by the nation's top returnees, as Washington sibling talents Alex and Andrew McClary (1:50.99 (nation’s best!) and 1:51.78) seek to handle Southland 800m specialists Michael Haddan of Woodbridge HS (1:51.02 and a former state champion) and Bryan Rodie, who posted a stunning 1:51.94 clocking in 2003 while nursing a fractured foot! Get ready for a dogfight here!
EVENT 145 MEN'S HIGH JUMP 7:30 P.M.
The assault on the 7-foot barrier continues for many West Coast talents here, with local entry Matt Turner of Chaffey already scaling 6-10 twice this spring, with consistent Ed Wright (St. Mary’s, Berkeley) joining him at that lofty height, and Reedley's Eric Fossen clearing 6-9 to lead California entries. Long Beach Poly sophomore Terrance Austin, already out to 6-08 this year, is among the others to watch!
EVENT 147 MEN'S TRIPLE JUMP 7:45 P.M.
James Logan HS in the Bay Area of Northern California has stamped itself as a hotbed of horizontal jumping talent in recent years, with the program producing a pair of hot 49-footers this spring in Angelo Jeffrey and Nkosinza Balumbu. Westmoor's Julian Eison is another name to surface in recent weeks, with a legal effort in the 47-foot range helping garner attention. Joel Tuosto, well capable of stretching out to 48-foot real estate, is also among the top entrants here.
EVENT 149 MEN'S 400M DASH INVITATIONAL 7:51 P.M.
Oh my!! Look out! National indoor 400m recordholder Elzie Coleman (Newburgh Free Academy HS) of New York electrified the wintertime track calendar with a stunning 45.92 at the Simplot Games in Idaho in February! Coleman will hardly get a chance to ease up any here, with stiff challengers including All-American hurdler Theo Ginn (Glenville HS, Ohio - USA Today Defensive Football Player of the Year) jumping into the one-lap cauldron here in joining Long Beach Poly's Derrick Jones (10.44 speed for the 100), St. John's Prep wunderkind Sean Lowe (48.04 indoors) and the red-hot Arizonan, Michael Hilbe 47.84 outdoors already!
EVENT 152 MEN'S 300M HURDLES INVITATIONAL 8:19 P.M.
Muir's Marquis Profit will try to delight the hometown crowd (Muir is located in Pasadena, a short 10-minute drive from here), with the sleek senior already strolling out to a state-leading 37.39 at the recent Pasadena Games! James Logan's Kevin Craddock, 37.71 last year, Virginia's Phillip Tondereau (Westfield HS) and Trabuco Hills' Bryan Payne (38.00) are other with gleaming credentials coming in.
EVENT 159 MEN'S 200M DASH INVITATIONAL 9:06 P.M.
Elzie Coleman, the national record holder indoors at 400m (45.92) is set for a titanic showdown here, with California state 100m champ Kenny O'Neal (10.40) also among those entering the half-lap dragon's lair here! Keep an eye on Kenny Moon (Corona), who has run some fine dual meet efforts and looks for competition.
EVENT 160 MEN'S TWO-MILE RUN INVITATIONAL 9:12 P.M.
27 runners, nearly all with personal bests of 9:13 or faster for 3200 meters identifies this as one of the greatest assembled fields in prep history! New Mexico's Shadrack Kiptoo (La Cueva HS) arrives here as the favorite after pounding a national-class field to win the recent Nike Indoor Classic (9:00.3 for two miles), but Colorado's Ryan Deak (the leading prep American at last months World Junior Cross-Country Championships and 8:51.65 3200m this winter), mile specialist Hakon DeVries (John Jay HS 4:11.38 for mile indoors this winter) and super returnee Justin Scheid (Pope John XIII HS ) of New York, and World Youth Games bronze medalist Chris Winter of Canada arriving to challenge California megatalents Mohamed Trafeh (with the Duarte HS star amazing at the longer distances 8:55.87 last year), El Toro's Brandon Bethke (the nation's most improved distance runner over the last month (4:10.69 1600 & 9:02.15 3200), and Logan's Yosef Ghebray (runaway Stanford Invite winner for 3000m at 8:27.77 and Oakland Relays 1600 winner by a ways at 4:12.39) along with a truckload of others! Another to closely watch!!!
EVENT 161 MEN'S DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY 9:27 P.M.
This one is going to be a classic, heart-stomping thriller! Shenendehowa HS of New Jersey stole the national indoor distance relay headlines this winter after a national record 4xmile performance, with the crew set to renew its battle with in-state rival Red Bank Regional (Shen prevailed, 10:22.0 to 10:22.7 at the Eastern States meet last month), with California distance superpowers Don Lugo, St. John Bosco and Canyon also figuring to stand good chance of dipping into the teens here tonight!
EVENT 154 MEN'S 4X400 M RELAY INVITATIONAL 10:01 P.M.
Glenville of Ohio returns three from a group that clocked a stunning 3:10.66 a year ago, with the Theo Ginn-anchored crew lurking as the favorites here! Long Beach Poly, with Derrick Jones on anchor, figures to vie for the California state title by year's end, with Newburgh Free Academy (New York) running 3:17 and chance with a mixed squad (including two here tonight) during the indoor campaign. Canyon of Canyon Country and Michael Hilbe-led Hamilton HS of Arizona are other very dangerous squads in the mix!
