SIX RECORDS TUMBLE AT 13TH FLYING TIGER
Summary by Lou Amestoy

North's Wyatt edges Diamond Ranch's Prentice in 300 hurdles showdown

By Louis Amestoy
SAN JACINTO -- Since first coming to the Flying Tiger Invitational in 2003, Riverside North's performances
have been all about the girls, but on Saturday it was a total, and dominating, team effort by the Huskies at Tiger Stadium.

North, powered by strength in the field events in hurdles, won six championships in the girls division, while earning five more in the boys. It was North's best combined effort at the meet ever.

Facing off against some top competition in several key events, the Huskies prevailed, especially in the boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Sophomore Reggie Wyatt, a state finalist in 2006, fought off Diamond Ranch star Terry Prentice in a memorable 300. Wyatt claimed the title with a seasonal-best mark of 36.60, which would make the No. 2 performer in the state and the No. 3 performer in the nation in 2007. Wyatt's mark shattered the meet and stadium record in the event.

Prentice, who won the 110 highs in record time and the long jump, raced to a 37.07 clocking, while San Jacinto Ken Shaw finished third in a personal best of 38.75. Chaparral's Mike Powers placed fourth in 39.87.

Wyatt also played a role in the Huskies' championship 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams. The Huskies raced to
a meet and stadium record of 42.01 in the 4x1, while running 3:16.88 in the 4x4.

Nevin Gutierrez won his third consecutive Flying Tiger 400 title with a 48.15 -- his best mark at San Jacinto ever. The Huskies also got a victory from high jumper Styce Asley (6-0).

North's girls, of course, were challenged by powerhouse Long Beach Wilson, and the Bruins provided plenty of opposition with four victories.

Shelise Williams, the state leader in the 200, set meet and stadium record in the 200 (24.25) and the 400 (55.10). After dropping the baton in the 400 relay, the Bruins rolled in the 1,600 with a meet and stadium record of 3:48.40.

After those record-setting efforts, Williams was named the athlete of the meet on the track.

Wilson's other victory came in the 100 meters from freshman Olivia Hudson (12.80).

But it was clearly North's day. The Huskies got wins from Brittany McGhee (shot put, 39-6), Ashley Whitney (discus, 137-7 1/2), Paula Lascon (high jump, 5-0), Marjani Maldonado (300 hurdles, 44.14) and Kierstan Kirkland (100 hurdles, 14.70).

The six girls wins gives North 23 girls victories at the Flying Tiger in five meets, only Murrieta Valley is better with 32.

Diamond Ranch and Chaparral also picked up two wins each. Diamond Ranch's Karyn Dunn earned field event
athlete of the meet after winning her second consecutive long jump title (18-5) and teammate Nichole Villanueva won the pole vault (8-0).

Chaparral's Vianna Hochstrasser won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter run. Hochstrasser fought off Hemet's Ashley Beechan in both races. In the 1,600, Hochstrasser ran 5:17.17, while turning in an 11:35.46 effort in the 3,200.

Yucca Valley's Chelsea Rexroat turned in a solid performance in the 800 with a 2:20.69 performance, which was a seasonal best. Paloma Valley's Jasmine Seymour won the triple jump with a 35-4 effort.

In the boys meet, there was plenty of anticipation about what Prentice would do. The Diamond Ranch senior
had already won five times during his career at San Jacinto.

He didn't disappointed and raised the level of competition and sportsmanship in each of his events. In the 110 highs, Prentice fought off a furious challenge by San Jacinto's Shaw. In the end, Prentice prevailed in a meet and stadium-record performance of 14.06, but he also pulled Shaw to a lifetime best of 14.27, whole Chaparral's Mike Powers ran 14.79

The victory marked Prentice's fourth consecutive win in the 110 highs and the fourth consecutive time he's set meet and stadium records. Prentice also won the long jump (23-1).

In his career at the Flying Tiger, Prentice won a record seven titles. Prentice was named athlete of the meet in the field events.

But it was Bryan Williams of Valley View who earned the track's athlete of the meet awards with two wins -- although one was a tie.

In the 100, Williams and North's Thomas Henry ended in a deadlock of 10.86 each. However, in the 200, it was
Williams who ran to a 21.79 performance -- the second fastest time ever run at Tiger Stadium.
