MINNESOTA STATE MEET

Maddie Gullickson Leads Wayzata Girls To AAA Title With Distance Double; Sprinter Jackson Ziebarth Powers Cambridge/Isanti Boys; Sebastian Strauss Wins Epic 400 Final

Wayzata senior Maddie Gullickson, one of the central figures in Wayzata's Nike Cross Nationals title last December, put together a fantastic weekend to help her team win the Minnesota state track and field title.

Gullickson won the 3,200 meters in a personal best time of 10:13.23 and then came back the next day to win the 1,600 meters in 4:41.65, a meet record time.

Wayzata pulled 43 points out of its 90 from those two events. (Minnesota scores nine place and first place is worth 12 points). The Spartans added 12 more by winning the 4x800 relay.

Jackson Ziebarth won the AAA boys 100 meters title in a meet record 10.37 seconds and was part of Cambridge/Isanti's winning 4x100 relay, which ran a new all-time state best 41.19.

In one of the greatest state meet races in history, Sebastian Strauss of Hastings beat Cooper Drake of Edina as they both went under the all-time state best in the 400 meters. Strauss ran 46.61 seconds, Drake 46.65.

The Osseo girls also ran the fastest 4x100 in state history with 46.53.

Taylor Kurtz from Rochester Mayo won the 100 and 200 meters in 11.79 and 23.67 seconds, respectively. She was also on the second-place 4x100 relay team.

McKaylen Lewis from Math & Science Academy won the girls long jump with 19-1.50. A week later she won the Nike Outdoor Nationals title with a big PR of 20-8.50.

Joshua Schmidt of Chaska won the boys pole vault title in Class AAA with 16-6. That was a bit short of his all-time Minnesota best of 17-6.
