OHIO STATE MEET

Anna Wile Breaks All-Time Ohio Hurdles Records; Wayne Boys, Avon Girls Win D1 Team Titles

By Oliver Hinson of DyeStat

In one of the best hurdles races anywhere across the country, Hilliard Davidson’s Anna Wile broke all-time Ohio records in both hurdles events, running 13.24 in the 100-meter hurdles and 40.70 in the 300-meter hurdles at the Ohio state track and field championships at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Wile's 13.24 is tied for US#1 among wind-legal performances. Her 300 hurdles time is US#5.

She is committed to Indiana University. Wile barely held on to beat Ric'keya White of New Albany, who ran a US#3 time of 13.25 for second in the 100 hurdles.

It was the first year of Ohio’s expansion from three to five divisions for track and field,

Dom Ellis of St. Xavier had a weekend to remember, becoming the first Cincinnati boy to win the “triple crown” (cross country state title, indoor 3,200 title, outdoor 3,200 title) since the 1990s.

Ellis won the 1,600 and the 3,200 meters, running 4:10.37 and 9:10.04, respectively.

It wasn’t enough to lead St. Xavier to a team title, though. Wayne’s Keyshawn Garrett and Keng Martin earned 39.5 points in the sprints and hurdles, and Wayne emerged victorious for the second straight year in the Division 1 team race with 55 points.

The Avon girls won with 68 points despite not having a single individual winner. They scored in 12 of 17 events, though, showcasing their depth.

Alyse Brediger scored 17 of those points, finishing in the top eight of the 100, 200 and 400. Kaitlyn Reese added 19 in the distance events, scoring in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

Division 2

Big Walnut’s Jamier Brown ran a time of 20.91 to win the 200 meters and was on the 4x100 squad that won in 41.53 seconds. He also won the 100 in 10.42 seconds to lead the Eagles to a share of the team championship. Big Walnut and New Philadelphia finished in a tie with 41 points.

Beechcroft’s Nehemiah Mills ran 46.41 in the 400, the 17th best time in the country this year.

Loveland ran 9:05.14 in the girls 4x800 relay.

Louisville’s Kylah Meyer ran 10:28.89 to win in the 3,200.

Lexington’s Latrell Hughes ran 1:49.46 in the 800, the 14th best mark in the country this year.

Chaminade Julienne won the girls title with 44 points.

Division 3

The Oakwood girls won the team with 52 points, spurred by a 1-2 finish in the pole vault by Mila Gelbert and Addie Kash. Gelbert and Kash both cleared 12-10, putting up 18 points.

They earned another 10 in the 4x800 relay, running 9:07.10 to win by five second.

On the boys side, Jay’Vier Kerr put up 22 points to lead Glenville to the team title. Kerr won the 400 in 46.92 seconds and jumped 24-6 to win the long jump, and he took eighth in the 200 and was on the 4x400 relay team that earned fourth.

Madison Henkel jumped 19-11.50 to break the Owens Stadium record in the long jump.

Sophia Szolosi (Athens) ran 10:17.47 to win the 3,200 meters.

Brittany Douglas (Beechcroft) ran 42.43 to win the 300-meter hurdles.

Shelby's boys won the 4x100 relay with a swift 41.30.

Division 4

Beachwood’s dominant sprint attack earned a resounding victory with 53 points.

Meena Abdul-Basser put up 20 points with wins in the 200 (25.16) and 400 (54.77), and K’Dyn Harris-Tate earned a win in the 100 (12.56) and took second in the 200.

Both Abdul-Basser and Harris-Tate were also on the 4x200 meter relay squad that broke the state meet record in a time of 1:39.86.

Margaretta won the boys title with 44 points and a more balanced attack. Cole Zang put up 10 points in the distance events, taking fourth in the 1,600 and 3,200, while Jace Berg, Jake Bouy and Kale Bailey put up 20 in the field. Bouy won the high jump with a clearance of 6-6, while Berg and Bailey took fourth in the discus and long jump, respectively.

Both 4x100 state meet records were broken; Gilmour Academy ran 42.27 to break the boys record, and Summit Country Day ran 48.59 to break the girls record.

Division 5

Luke Schnieber of Cincinnati Country Day put up one of the best performances of the weekend, breaking the all-time Ohio record in the boys pole vault with 17-5. That upped the state record by a half inch.

Siblings Trevon and Gavin Baxter led Columbus Grove to the boys team title last Sunday, scoring all but a handful of the team’s points.

Trevon, a senior, took sixth in the 100 and 200 and won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 8.25 inches.

Gavin, a sophomore, took fourth in the long jump and second in the 110-meter hurdles. Both siblings were on the 4x100 meter relay squad that took second. Between the two of them, they scored 34 of Columbus Grove’s 42.5 points.

The girls scored 59 points for the title thanks to a dominant showing in the relays. They took second in the 4x100 and 4x200 and third in the 4x800, and they won the 4x400 in a time of 3:55.56.

There were also some notable distance doubles; Smithville’s Kaitlyn Carr ran 4:57.78 and 10:52.85 to win the girls 1,600 and 3,200, and Ansonia’s Bennett Lehman ran 4:16.15 and 9:26.14 to win the boys 1,600 and 3,200.
