WISCONSIN STATE MEET

Cole Zielinski Breaks 61-Year-Old State Record With US#1 25-9.75 Mark In Long Jump

By Oliver Hinson of DyeStat

Cole Zielinski of Waukesha West broke the oldest record on the books in Wisconsin when he scored a massive new personal best of 25-9.75 in the long jump, a US#1 mark at the Wisconsin state championships.

Zielinski, a junior, was also part of another Wisconsin record with his teammates when they ran the 4x200 prelims in 1:25.65. The team won the final in 1:25.76. Zielinski, who was fourth in the long jump at Nike Indoor Nationals, also won the triple jump with 48-2.

Grady Lenn gave the crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium a bit of deja vu on Saturday, pulling off another distance double at the Wisconsin Track and Field State Championship and ending his career with five state titles.

Lenn ran 4:03.90 to win the 1,600 meters and 8:49.15 to win the 3,200, the latter of which was a meet record performance.

Last year, Lenn ran 4:01.79 and 8:52.79, defeating Onalaska’s Manny Putz in a pair of close races. This year, without Putz in the picture, Lenn’s victories were more authoritative. Landon Franke (Racine Horlick) gave him a run for his money in the 1,600, running 4:05.43, but Lenn was all alone in the 3,200, winning by over 12 seconds.

Menomonie’s Lauren McCalla broke a state meet record of her own, running 4:38.54 to win the girls 1,600. McCalla also won the 800 in 2:08.68.

Kyenret Rinkam of Brookfield Central won the girls 100 meters in 11.62 seconds and the 200 in 23.82.

Trey Resch from Arrowhead was also a double sprint champion, winning the 100 in 10.59 and the 200 in 20.98.

Homestead won the Division 1 boys title with 48 points, as Jemekhi Tally won the 800 in a meet record time of 1:51.00 and anchored his 4x800 relay to a win (7:43.00).

The Arrowhead girls won th team title with 76 points thanks to a deep attack in the sprints; they picked up points in the 100, 200, 400, 4x100 and 4x200.

Division 2

Aliya and Ciara Hartman’s dominance in the distance events led Bloomer to the girls team title with 56 points. Aliya won the 3,200 in 10:33.94 and took third in the 1,600, while Ciara won the 1,600 in 4:55.09 and took second in the 3,200.

Both Hartmans were also on the 4x800 relay squad that broke the meet record with a 9:02.77 performance.

Osceola’s Elletta Uddin broke the all-time state best in the 100-meter hurdles with 13.44 and broke a meet record in the 300 hurdles with 42.3. She is the sixth girl in state history to sweep the two hurdles events all four years.

A few records went down in the sprint relays, too; New Berlin West broke the meet record in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:40.25, and Pius XI Catholic ran 47.76 to break the 4x100 meet record.

Hayward’s Harper Sheehan also had a great weekend; she ran 24.38 to win the 200 and a meet record 54.56 to win the 400.

Winneconne won the boys team title with 71.5 points, about half of which came from field events. Hudson Samolinski won the shot put with a throw of 61-2.75 and took second in the discus, while Trey Zemke and Brody Schaffer took first in the pole vault (15-0) and second in the long jump, respectively.

Rice Lake’s Carter Kucko pulled off a distance double, running 4:11.65 to win the 1,600 and breaking the meet record in the 3,200 with a time of 9:01.75.

Division 3

Ladysmith won the Division 3 girls title by the slimmest of margins, scoring 34.5 points and beating Assumption by half a point.

Lyla and Marika Gago put up 16 of those points by themselves with a 1-3 finish in the long jump; Lyla jumped 18-11.75 for the win and Marika took third with a jump of 18-5.75.

Another pair of Ladysmith siblings, Hailey and Kayla Wilmot, earned 10.5 points in the pole vault; Hailey cleared 11-9 for the win, and Kayla tied for eighth.

Kickapoo/La Forge broke the meet records in the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays, running 48.87 and 1:41.92.

On the boys side, Marathon put up 55 points and enjoyed a larger margin of victory, coming in 15 points ahead of Abundant Life Christian.

Chris Marcell led the way for Marathon, throwing 201-6 to win the discus and breaking the meet record in the shot put with a throw of 63-7.
