Simon Rosselli won both the boys discus and shot put competitions and led the Mead Panthers to a class 4A team title at the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association Track and Field Championships, taking place May 28-30.
The class 4A, 3A and 2A meet was held in Tacoma at Mount Tahoma High; the Class 1A, 2B and 1B meet was held in Yakima at Eisenhower High.
Rosselli, the Washington state record holder in the discus off to the University of Oregon next fall, won his third consecutive state title in the event, throwing 223 feet, 11 inches to shatter his own state meet record mark he set the previous year by over 18 feet. It's just the second time this season Rosselli has surpassed 220 feet and his first since throwing his US#1 225-6 at the Arcadia Invitational, which ranks No. 6 all-time in high school history.
But for the first time in his career, Rosselli was able to add an additional state title, winning the shot put with a throw of 68-0.75, just over 1.5 feet off the state meet record of 69-9.50 that's stood since 1977.
Rosselli's 20 points, which were the only event wins his team collected, guided Mead back on top of the podium stand for the first time since 2024 but this time at a different classification. The Panthers, who won the class 3A title in 2024, won the class 4A title with 55 points, defeating Olympia by two points. Mead clinched the program's ninth title after finishing second in the 4x400 relay to Issaquah.
Across all classifications, an abundance of all-time state and state meet records fell over the three-day period.
In distance events, Amin Fidaar of Rogers (Puyallup) broke Carl Moe's 2003 state meet record in the 1,600 by nearly half a second in 4 minutes, 4.57 seconds; Cohen Butler of Camas broke Ethan Coleman's 3,200 state meet record record of 8:49.00 by almost six seconds in 8:43.77; and Caden Durocher of Olympia broke Nick Boersma's 2012 800 state meet record of 1:49.87 by a little over a tenth of a second in 1:49.74.
Butler's 3,200 was a meet record across all divisions, lowering James Mwaura's time of 8:46.87 from 2018.
Freshman Quenton Lanese of Olympia re-broke both his own national freshman class records in the 1,600 and 3,200 races in 4:04.59 and 8:47.19, respectively. He finished second in both races.
Kenyon Andrews of Hazen ran another record-breaking performance in the boys 300 hurdles, breaking his own state meet record of 36.00 with a US#5 35.80, which is also a Washington all-time best.
Jonathan Allen of Hanford, only a sophomore, cleared a US#6 17-6 to win the boys pole vault and set an all-time Washington best.
Yevhen Zhmailo of Lake Washington, a future Oklahoma Sooner, swept both the long jump (24-0.75) and triple jump (49-0.25) titles for the second consecutive year.

Latham West of Bonney Lake won both the girls 1,600 (4:48.99) and 3,200 (10:18.99) titles in lifetime best efforts. Aubrey Wilems of Eastlake won the girls 800, also in a personal best of 2:08.91.

Lauren Balousek in the 400 (54.80) and the 4x400 relay (3:51.86) were the other two.
Cassidy Armstrong of Ballard, a Nike Cross Nationals All-American and future Duke Blue Devil, ran an impressive solo victory in the girls 3,200, running 10:13.69 to finish within less than three seconds of Allie Janke's state meet record of 10:10.83.
