Landon Kimmel Breaks Course Record For Division 1 Victory; Mason Boys, Lancaster Girls Win Team Battles

Tippecanoe junior Landon Kimmel made headlines in Ohio on Saturday when he broke William Zegarski's 2021 state meet course record at Fortress Obetz, running a time of 14:33.8. 

Kimmel's time surpassed the record by six seconds and he was one of three boys to go under 15 minutes in the Division 1 final. Alex Bruns of St. Xavier was second in 14:47.1 and Eli Ilg of Jackson (Massillon), last year's runner-up, finished third in 14:57.0.

Kimmel was third in the race as a sophomore. This fall his only loss came against Bruns at the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational in Louisville, Ky. 

Mason won the boys team title with 111 points and St. Xavier was next with 180. 

Senior Daniela Scheffler from Lake (Uniontown) won the girls D1 individual title in a time of 17:01.2. Brooke Chapman of Olentangy Orange was second in 17:12.1. 

Evelyn Prodoehl of Lakota West, the 2023 champion, was fifth. Katy Zang of Teays Valley was the fastest girl in the state up through her district meet but was injured prior to regionals and did not run at state. 

Lancaster's Marisa Heil was third in 17:12.4 and led the Golden Gales to the team title with 114 points. Hilliard Davidson was the first team with five to cross the finish line but finished second with 132 points. 

Andrew Walton from Fairfield Union shined in the Division 2 boys race, winning by three and a half seconds in 15:09.8. Teammate Nathan Phillips joined him in the top 10 (eighth) and the Falcons won the state title with 88 points.

Sophia Szolosi from Athens had the easiest time of it, winning the D2 girls race by nearly 30 seconds in 17:39.6. 

Minerva edged Hathaway Brown 100 to 110 for the team title. 

The Minster girls won their 17th state title after scoring 135 points in the Division 3 race and surviving close challenges from Summit Country Day (140) and Rittman (144). 

Caroline Hamilton from Legacy Christian beat Rebecca Geiss of Heartland Christian by little more than a second, 17:43.2 to 17:44.4. 

Luke Snyder from Rittman plunged under the 15-minute barrier to win the D3 boys race in 14:58.1. 

Second-place finisher Will Baker (15:06.2) led Mount Gilead to the tam title.
