NORTH CAROLINA STATE MEET

Michael Haskin And Sofi Alexander Bring Individual Titles Back To Flood-Ravaged Asheville

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Two runners from Asheville, the city perhaps most impacted by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene, won Class 4A individual cross country titles on Saturday at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

Michael Haskin, who flew cross country to the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in California in September and placed 23rd in a national field, held off Philip Blum of Riverside-Durham by a second and a half to win the state title in 15:21.7.

And Sofi Alexander won the girls 4A race in 18:01.2, also by a second and a half, over Ragsdale freshman Elle Dawson

Seven of the eight team championships up for grabs stayed with the teams that won them last year.

Marvin Ridge scored 68 points and put three in the top 13 to win the boys 4A title; Cardinal Gibbons, a top-20 team nationally, put four in the top 12 and won its second consecutive title with 62 points.

The one change at the top was in the 3A boys competition, where Orange unseated Croatan.

Ethan Rich from Western Harnett won the 3A race in 15:26.2.

North Lincoln maintained supremacy of the 3A girls ranks and won a fourth straight title with 56 points.

Morgan Miller of First Flight repeated her title 18:05.0.

The Brevard boys and NC School of Science & Math girls both won again at the Class 2A level.

Catherine Parker, Moira Furr and Helen Chen went 1-2-3 to start the scoring for Science & Math. It was Parker's second straight state victory.

Jack Anstrom of Seaforth won the 2A boys race in 15:52.9. Brevard went 3-4-6 on the way to its team victory.
