CONNECTICUT STATE MEET

Bethel Boys, Bloomfield Girls Prevail At Connecticut State Open

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Bethel junior Adrian Vasquez won a photo-finish close race in the boys 100 meters, finished second in the 200 and ran a leg on the second-place 4x400 relay team to help his team win the boys team title at the Connecticut State Open meet on June 6.

Vasquez pulled out the 100 meters in 10.82 after he and Rodney Crockett of Middletown were both given the same time. Crockett had beaten Vasquez a week earlier in the Class L final with a state-leading time of 10.54 to Vasquez's 10.62.

Bethel also got a big contribution from Khoa Ly, who won the triple jump with 47-7.50 and finished second in the long jump with 23-0.

Brenan McCabe of Immaculate was one of the standout performers of the meet, winning the 400 meters in a personal best time of 46.34 seconds. He also won the 200 meters in 21.51 seconds.

The Bloomfield girls won for the eighth time since 2012 with 64 points.

Senior Vanessa Agyemang helped the Hawks win this year's title with her victories in the 100-meter hurdles (14.26) and long jump (19-3.50).

Bloomfield also won the 4x100 relay in 46.89 seconds.

Sarah Roberts from Mercy won one of the best matchups of the meet in the 800 meters, running 2:09.00 to defeat Chase Gilbert of Old Lyme (2:09.25). Gilbert won the 1,600 meters in 4:45.88.
