Kieran Lumb Wins Tactical Men's 5,000 With 53-Second Close

Gabriela Debues-Stafford won the Canadian national title in the women's 5,000 meters on a wet Thursday session at the Canadian Track and Field Championships presented by Bell at the Terry Fox Athletic Center in Ottawa.

It was Debues-Stafford's third consecutive win in the 5,000 meters and eighth national title overall. She won in 15:23.26 and beat Jadyn Keeler by seven seconds. Keeler, who competes for the University of North Dakota, ran a tough 5,000/10,000 double at the NCAA Championships a week ago.

World and Olympic champion Camryn Rogers won the women's hammer throw with 76.17m (249-11). Any of her five legal throws would have been long enough to win the competition, handily, over second-place Jillian Weir.

Kieran Lumb won a slow men's 5,000 meters in 14:24.29, closing in 53.18. Matthew Beaudet was second in 14:29.06.

Adrianna Buitelaar broke the meet record in the women's U20 5,000 meters with her time of 16:27.02.

Brendan Currie was nearly as fast as the top senior men in the U20 5,000 race, winning it in 14:40.74.

In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, former Oregon State runner Grace Fetherstonhaugh beat Big Ten champion Katelyn Stewart-Barnett of Michigan State, 9:35.36 to 9:40.80. 

Jean-Simon Desgagnés won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:50.71.

In the men's decathlon, first-day leader Nathaniel Paris didn't finish his 110-meter hurdles race and dropped out of the competition. 

Jackson Mackay was one of just six men to finish all 10 events and won the national title with 7,812 points. 

Adam Freure won the U20 decathlon with 6,758 points. 

In the prelims, Lauren Gale ran the fastest time in the women's 400 meters with 51.78 seconds. 

Christopher Morales Williams, the world indoor champion, won his prelim of the men's 400 in 46.02.

Gursher Gabri won the men's U20 hammer title with 65.01m (213-3).
