Werro Defeats Keely Hodgkinson, Femke Broeders-Bol In Much Anticipated Matchup

Switzerland's Audrey Werro defeated British star Keely Hodgkinson and Dutch newcomer to the event, Femke Broeders-Bol, in one of the marquee events of the week-long European Championships in Birmingham, England on Friday. 

It wasn't the fastest that Werro has run this year, but she went out fast (56.5) and beat Hodgkinson, the Olympic champion, and Broeders-Bol, the world champion in the 400-meter hurdles. 

Werro's time of 1:54.81, a meet record, was her fourth-fastest result this year and tied for 16th all-time. 

Hodgkinson was second in 1:55.01 and Broeders-Bol ran a personal best and tied the 34-year-old Dutch national record with 1:55.54. 

Since Hodgkinson beat Werro at the World Indoor Championships in Poland in March, the Swiss runner has been unstoppable on the track. She ran 1:53.80 to become the third-fastest woman of all-time -- and fastest in 43 years -- on June 28 in Paris. 

Karsten Warholm of Norway also broke a meet record when he won the men's 400-meter hurdles in 46.63 seconds. He now holds seven of the 17 fastest performances of all-time in the event. Rai Benjamin also owns seven. 

German Owen Ansah won the men's 200 meters in 19.95 seconds, defeating Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes (20.16). 

Former Oregon and Arizona State thrower Jorinde Van Klinken of The Netherlands won the women's discus with a big first attempt 67.67m (222-0). 

Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy jumped 2.32m (7-7.25) to win the men's high jump. 

Olympic Games and World Championships silver medalist Nadia Battolcletti won the women's 10,000 meters in 31:41.17.
