Girls 1 to 5
6. Saugus
Division 2
Section: Southern Section
League: Foothill League
2012 Finish: 1st in State Division 2
Head Coach: Rene Paragas
Eight Straight? It won't be easy for Saugus to extend their streak of seven straight state championships, but it never is, is it? The Saugus girls return their #1,3, and 7 runners from last year's Division 2 state championship squad. Junior Samantha Ortega. last year's state runner-up, leads the Centurians, along with state returners senior Abigail Frankian and junior Darby Laplant. They will also call on the talent of 800 meter state finalist Sabrina Janes, who will be ready to contribute at the varsity level this year. Though they start the season ranked outside the top 5, we know Coach Rene Paragas has a track record for turning above average athletes into state champion runners. Expect Saugus to be in a close battle for the Division 2 state title and perhaps another berth at NXN.
Top Returners:
7. Rancho Bernardo Division 2
Section: San Diego Section
League: Palomar League
2012 Finish: 9th in State Division 2
Head Coach: Terry Dockery
The Rancho Bernardo girls return 6 (all but #5) from the team that placed 9th in state Division 2 last year. Senior sisters Danielle and Lauren Voyles lead the team, with senior Katie Sammer, junior Bryanna Fuller, and sophomore Nia Akins (5:04 1600) providing strong support. Rancho Bernardo should be in the thick of the fight to get on the podium in the tough girls Division 2.
Top Returners:
8. Davis Senior Division 1
Section: Sac-Joaquin Section
League: Delta Valley Conference
2012 Finish: 5th in State Division 1
Head Coach: Bill Gregg
Davis Senior is again one of the top girls teams out of Northern California this year, returning 5 from the team that placed 5th in State Division 1 last year. They are led by standout sophomore Fiona O'Keeffe (5:03/10:40), with senior Sophie Meads is a tough #2. A strong junior class will fill in the scoring contingent for the Blue Devils.
Top Returners:
9. La Costa Canyon Division 2
Section: San Diego Section
League: Avocado West League
2012 Finish: 2nd in State Division 2
Head Coach: Bill Vice
La Costa Canyon has some streaks going, with three consecutive SDS crowns and three runner-up finishes at the state championships. Seniors Emma Abrahamson and Rebekah Bosler lead Mavericks, bringing solid track credentials along with a ton of elite racing experience. Sophomore Sarah Abrahamson and Senior Alex Fromme should also be solid scorers. They lost serious firepower to graduation last spring, but expect Coach Bill Vice to re-load from a deep roster of sub-6:00 girls in the program.
Top Returners:
10. Campolindo Division 3
Section: North Coast Section
League: Diablo Foothill Athletic League
2012 Finish: 9th in State Division 3
Had Coach: Chuck Woolridge
The Campolindo girls are returning their top 5 from the very young team that took 9th in state Division 3 last year. With a 10:41 3200 best, junior Brighid Leach is the low-stick for the Cougars. Junior Mary Orders and sophomore Hanna Sun follow as a formidable 2/3 combination with sold backup after that. They are poised to fight for a Division 3 state title this year, and under the guidance of veteran coach Chuck Woolridge, they could be at a whole new level in 2014.
