Top 50 Countdown
Boys 6 to 10

6. Jurupa Hills

Division 3
Section: Southern Section
League: Mountain Valley League
2012 Finish: 5th in State D3
Head Coach: Scott Nielsen

Never heard of Jurupa Hills? If you haven't, you will! Jurupa Hills opened it's doors just three years ago, and the cross country program has improved by eaps and bounds in that short time. Last year they grabbed 5th place in State Division 3, and they return ALL SEVEN from that squad. Junior Michael Teran leads the team, followed closely by juniors Devon Reed and Britton Reed, all three of whom have sub 9:40 credentials in track. Seniors Daniel Aguilera and Joseph Rodriguez fill in a strong scoring five. Look for the Spartans to challenge for the Divison 3 state title and be in the mix for a ticket to NXN.

Top Returners:

  •  Michael Teran (11) - 9:22/ 14:17 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Devon Reed (11) - 9:33/ 14:49 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Daniel Aguilera (12) - 4:38/ 15:57 Mt. Sac
  •  Britton Reed (11) - 9:38
  •  Joseph Rodriguez (12) - 10:09/ 16:04 Mt. Sac

7. Madera South

Division 1
Section: Central Section
League: County/Metro League
2012 Finish: 7th in State D1
Head Coach: Rich Parris

Madera South has become a regular fixture at the CIF State Championships representing the Central Section. Last year they took 7th place in Division 1 and return 4 runners from that squad. David Garcia ran a steller 15:43 on the Woodward Park course as a soph and is back to lead the Stallions. Eduardo Herrera, Juan Macias, and Michael Marquez solidify the scoring core. Adding promise for the future is incoming freshman Miguel Villar who has a 9:26 3k to his credit.  After several state appearances in the thick of the pack, it appears the Stallions are finally ready to challenge for the podium.

Top Returners:

  •  David Garcia (12) - 15:43 State XC
  •  Eduardo Herrera (10) - 4:37/ 9:31/ 16:12 CS Finals
  •  Juan Macias (11) - 4:30/ 9:43/ 16:07 CS Finals
  •  Michael Marquez (12) - 4:34/ 9:44/ 16:28 State XC
  •  Luis Becerra (11) - 10:03
  •  Miguel Villar (9) 4:21 1500/ 9:26 3k

8. Westlake

Division 2
Section: Southern Section
League: Marmonte League
2012 Finish: 1st in State D2
Head Coach: Joe Snyder

Westlake was a bit of a surprise last year when the snagged the 2012 Division 2 State Championship with a great November run. This year they return six from that team, led by Southern Section D2 3200 Champion senior Mikey Giguere. Seniors Chris Costa and Sean O'Bryan, along with junior Graham Rigby, make for a solid core, and transfer Jimmy DeMello from Thousand Oaks should solidify the scoring five. Coach Joe Snyder's Warriors aren't likely to surprise anyone this year, but you can expect they will be very tough to dethrone Thanksgiving weekend.

Top Returners:

  •  Mikey Giguere (12) - 4:20/ 9:12/ 14:18 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Chris Costa (12) - 4:28/ 9:29/ 15:36 Mt. Sac
  •  Sean O'Bryan (12) - 15:58 State XC
  •  Graham Rigby (11) - 4:22/ 10:24/ 16:16 State XC
  •  Jimmy DeMello (11) - 4:31/ 16:49 Mt. Sac (Transfer)

9. Redondo Union

Division 2
Section: Southern Section
League: Bay League
2012 Finish: 3rd in State D2
Head Coach: Bob Leetch

Redondo Union returns a strong contingent from their 3rd place team from last year's Division 2 state championship race. Seniors Dustin Herold and Will Tait, along with junior Carlos Suarez, form a strong lead trio for the Seahawks with proven racing experience. Coach Bob Leetch has a deep roster ready to back up the three, and a track record to prove he knows how to do it. Redondo Union looks poised to challenge for that Division 2 state title that has eluded them in recent years.

Top Returners:

  •  Dustin Herold (12) - 4:24/ 14:33 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  William Tait (12) - 4:24/ 9:24/ 15:24 Mt. Sac
  •  Carlos Suarez (11) - 4:28/ 9:26/ 15:52 Mt. Sac
  •  Waseem Radi (12) - 4:31/ 15:10 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Takehiro Yamaya (12) - 4:35/ 16:04 Mt. Sac

10. Warren

Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: San Gabriel Valley League
2012 Finish: 15th in Southern Section Finals
Head Coach: Ramon Miranda

2012 looked to be the year the Warren boys would finally earn that elusive ticket to the state championships, but the season ended with a disappointing 15th place finish at the Southern Section Divison 1 Finals. To their credit, the boys picked themselves up and killed it on the track last spring, with five returners turning in 3200 times between 9:20 and 9:55. Junior Benjamin Gonzalez leads the charge for the Bears, followed by juniors Jonathan Rodriguez, Andres Bernal, and seniors Michael Hernandez and Brandon Iraheta. Coach Ramon Mirada's boys want it bad and any team in their way better be ready.

Top Returners:

  •  Benjamin Gonzalez (11) - 4:24/ 9:22/ 15:24 Mt. Sac
  •  Jonathan Rodriguez (11) - 4:29/ 9:41/ 14:42 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Andres Bernal (11) - 4:36/ 9:38/ 14:52 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Michael Hernandez (12) - 4:36/ 9:45/ 16:26 Clovis
  •  Brandon Iraheta (12) - 4:35/ 9:53/ 16:36 Clovis
