1. Great Oak

Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: Southwestern League
2012 Finish: 1st in State Division 1
Head Coach: Doug Soles

The Great Oak girls are led this year by the rock-solid senior trio of Ashley Helbig, Haley Dorris, and Chrissy Calain, as well as junior Maiya Larsen. Add new sophomore superstar Destiny Collins to the mix, and you couldn't ask for a better combination! As always, Coach Doug Soles has a deep roster of up and coming girls ready to lend support.  The Wolfpack is the team to beat this year for the Division 1 state title, and have their best opportunity yet to vie for a podium fiinish at Nike Cross Nationals.

2. Simi Valley

Division 2
Section: Southern Section
League: Marmonte League
2012 Finish: 3rd in State Division 1
Head Coach: Roger Evans

Having 2-time NXN and 6-time state champion Sarah Baxter leading the charge ensures a great start for any team, but the Pioneers have the depth to back her up. Senior Charlotte Utash has closed the gap to the number two spot significantly this year, going 10:47 on the track.  A deep junior class including Desirae Jones, Olivia Roselini, Samatha Tetef, and Sarah Riggs, ensures that the Pioneers will be in the championship hunt in November. Back to Division 2 for the 2013 season, Simi gets another shot at knocking off perrenial power Saugus for the Division 2 state title, and has the tools to vie for a top 10 finish at NXN.

Top Returners:
  •  Sarah Baxter (12) - 4:53/ 10:06/ 16:00 Mt. Sac
  •  Charlotte Utash (12) - 5:11/ 10:47/ 16:54 SS Finals (rain course)
  •  Desirae Jones (11) - 5:15/ 16:47 SS Finals (rain course)

3. St Francis (Sacramento)

Division 1
Section: Sac-Joaquin Section
League: Delta River League
2012 Finish: 2nd in State Division 1
Head Coach: John DuCray

The St. Francis Girls had a ground-breaking year in 2012, becoming the first team from the Sac-Joaquin Section [in fact, all of NorCal] to finish on the podium in State Division 1, (2nd place), and earning their first trip to Nike Cross Nationals.  This year they return their 1,2,4, and 5 runners.  Lauren Larocco leads a tight pack including fellow senior Madison Rawson and juniors Miranda Myers, Peyton Bilo, and Camille Boudreax. Look for the Troubadours to make some serious waves on the state level yet again.

Top Returners:
  •  Lauren Larocco (12) - 5:03/ 10:48/ 18:10 State XC
  •  Miranda Myers (11) - 5:02/ 10:58/ 18:35 Clovis

4. Buchanan

Division 1
Section: Central Section
League: Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC)
2012 Finish: 4th in State Division 1
Head Coach: Brian Weaver

The girls from Buchanan look to be a strong as ever coming into the 2013 cross country season, despite the loss of star Hagen Reedy to graduation.  Junior Hannah Benoit leads a solid group of upper-classmen in ther scoring five includie Jose Frye, Maddy Nikkel, Miranda Kennedy, and Justice Hinojosa.  All five girls have sub-19:00 Woodward Park PRs to their credit going into the season. Expect a lot of red and blue near the front of the Division 1 pack once again this November.

  •  Hannah Benoit (11) - 5:00/ 10:51/ 18:37 State XC
  •  Josie Frye (11) - 5:16/ 11:04/ 18:54 CS Finals
  •  Maddy Nikkel (12) - 5:01/ 11:14/ 18:28 CS Finals

5. Capistrano Valley

Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: Sea View League
2012 Finish: 7th in State Division 1
Head Coach: Ken Sales

The Capistrano Valley girls placed 7th in state Division 1 last fall, and lost ZERO to graduation.  Junior Grace Schafer (10:47/17:31 Mt. Sac) leads the Cougars, followed closely by Natalie Herberg, Rebecca Deitch, and Ashley Licata, and supported by one of the deepest rosters in the state in recent years.  Look for Capistrano Valley to be in the fight for a podium spot in Division 1 Thanksgiving weekend.
