Boys 1 to 5
By Scott Joerger, scottj@dyestat.com
1. Arcadia Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: Pacific League
2012 Finish: 1st in State D1
Head Coach: Michael Feraco-Eberle
The Apaches return five from their 2012 State Division 1 and NXN championship team, led by State D1 and NXN runner-up Estevan De La Rosa. De La Rosa is backed up by super-sophomore Phillip Rocha and the senior trio of Josue Gonzalez, Jarrick Wenslow, and Bryan Ngo. The Apaches lost legendary Head Coach Jim O'Brien this summer (amongst considerable controversy), but the reigns have been handed to long time assistant and O'Brien protege Michael Feraco-Eberle, so a major change in the programs focus isn't likely. Don't think for a minute that the boys from Arcadia will be deterred; we anticipate that that they will continue their winning ways and are once again the team to beat in 2013.

2. Long Beach Poly Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: Moore League
2012 Finish: 5th in State D1
Head Coach: Mike Fillipow
The Long Beach Poly boys had a break through year in 2012, taking 5th place in Division 1 at the State Championships last November. They are back - ALL SEVEN OF THEM - in 2013. Senior Miguel Bautista leads the pack, with strong support from seniors Jovani Gamboa, Christain Vasquez, and junior Anthony Palazzo. The Jackrabbits are the most likely challengers to Arcadia dominance this fall, fighting for the Division 1 State Championship and a ticket to NXN.

3. Dana Hills Division 1
Section: Southern Section
League: South Coast League
2012 Finish: 8th in State D1
Head Coach: Tim Butler
Does anyone remember when Dana Hills wasn't among the state's top teams? Ya me neither! The Dolphins are led by sophomore star Jake Ogden and a deep senior class including state returners Gavin Diem, Wyler Svoboda, and Nic Serrao. As usual, Coach Tim Butler has a large group of developing talent ready to step up to the big leagues. Look for the Dana boys to improve on last year's 8th place finish in state and will be in the hunt for the State Division 1 title.

4. Brea Olinda Division 3
Section: Southern Section
League: Century League
2012 Finish: 3rd in State D3
Head Coach: Jeremy Mattern
The Brea Olinda boys are back and are poised to have their best season yet. They are led by Sophomore star Austin Tamagno who finished 6th in the state meet as a freshman, then ran a 4:09 1600 this spring to set a national freshman record. Not far behind is senior standout Brennon Koryta who has the credentials to be the #1 man on most other teams. Providing support are juniors Skyler Garcia and Angel Escobar, and senior DiMaggio Orozco. The boys from Brea are a strong favorite for the state Division 3 title and should be in the hunt for a ticket to Portland to run at NXN.
Top Returners:
5. De La Salle Division 1
Section: North Coast Section
League: East Bay Athletic League
2012 Finish: 12th in State D1
Head Coach: John Pelster
De La Salle is "King in the North" coming into this cross country season, and are returning their #'s 1,2,3,5, and 6 runners. Last year they lost team leader Blair Hurlock to injury mid-season and had to face the post-season one man down. But Blair came back with full strength this spring running 9:11 and 4:14, and is ready to lead his teammates on a championship charge. Veterans ready to join that charge include junior Matt Shumann, and seniors Luke Williams and Clark Messman. Expect the Spartans to give the southerners a serious fight come Thanksgiving weekend.
