2013 CIF-SS Finals: Fastest Boys Year Ever?

I have to believe the CIF SS Finals were the fastest ever, certainly on the boys side.  In all, seventeen boys broke 15:00 minutes on Saturday:

Name School Time
David Luna Indio 14:33
Austin Tamagno Brea Olinda 14:39
Jake Ogden Dana Hills 14:41
Robert Brandt Loyola 14:43
Estevan De La Rosa Arcadia 14:44
Garrett Corcoran Villa Park 14:45
Benjamin Gonzalez Warren 14:45
Caleb Webb Big Bear 14:48
Sydney Gidabuday El Modena 14:48
Michael Teran Jurupa Hills 14:50
Phillip Rocha Arcadia 14:50
Jeff Kirwin Glendora 14:55
Wes Walsh Canyon 14:55
Ruben Dominguez Don Bosco Tech 14:58
Nick Lofgren South Torrance 14:58
Brian Zabilski Saugus 14:58
Casey Celestin Palos Verdes 14:59

I took a quick look at previous years for Southern Section Finals, and I didn't find half that many in any given year:
2011 - 8 boys broke 15:00
2010 - N/A - Rain Course
2009 - 8 boys broke 15:00
2008 - 6 boys broke 15:00

Ok - ready for the scary part?  Eleven of those seventeen boys ARE NOT SENIORS.

Name School Time
Austin Tamagno Brea Olinda 14:39
Jake Ogden Dana Hills 14:41
Robert Brandt Loyola 14:43
Benjamin Gonzalez Warren 14:45
Caleb Webb Big Bear 14:48
Michael Teran Jurupa Hills 14:50
Phillip Rocha Arcadia 14:50
Jeff Kirwin Glendora 14:55
Wes Walsh Canyon 14:55
Nick Lofgren South Torrance 14:58
Brian Zabilski Saugus 14:58

In all, I count 22 California boys who have gone sub 15:00 on the Mt. Sac Course this year:

Name School Mt. Sac Invitational CIF-SS Finals
1 Tal Braude Torrey Pines 14:27
2 Austin Tamagno Brea Olinda 14:34 14:39
3 Garrett Corcoran Villa Park 14:29 14:45
4 David Luna Indio 14:45 14:33
5 Jake Ogden Dana Hills   14:41
6 Robert Brandt Loyola   14:43
7 Estevan De La Rosa Arcadia   14:44
8 Blair Hurlock De La Salle 14:48
9 Steve Correa San Pedro 14:49
10 Michael Teran Jurupa Hills   14:50
11 Phillip Rocha Arcadia 14:51 14:50
12 Benjamin Gonzalez Warren 14:57 14:45
13 Sydney Gidabuday El Modena 14:54 14:48
14 Caleb Webb Big Bear 14:56 14:48
15 Jeff Kirwin Glendora   14:55
16 Wes Walsh Canyon   14:55
17 Steven Fahy La Costa Cnyn 14:57
18 Nick Lofgren South Torrance   14:58
19 Ruben Dominguez Don Bosco Tech   14:58
20 Brian Zabilski Saugus   14:58
21 Alan Yoho Flintridge (lcf) 14:58
22 Casey Celestin Palos Verdes   14:59

And fast times are coming from around the state.  Tal Braude of SDS has the fastest time on the course this year in winning the Individual Sweeps at Mt. Sac, and Blair Hurlock of the NCS won the Team Sweeps.  In fact, Hurlock took down the 11 year old record at the Hayward High Course at the NCS Finals last Saturday.  This was a record many thought was out put out of reach by Yong-Sung Leal, but Hurlock broke it by 4 seconds and many observers say he has much left in the tank (see Contra Costa Times article). Not mentioned in the article - Aidan Goltra of Campolindo went 14:44 to record one of the fastest times of all time.

So this leads to some questions: How many will go sub 15:00 at State next weekend?  And with 11 non-seniors going sub 15:00 this year, how fast will next year be??

I admit, I was a bit surprised we didn't see ANY sub 15's. I thought we'd see a handful. But a great meet none the less!

It's because of the formatting, and the ATV/Rhino kicking up dust for the lead pack to breathe so that video could be shot by a for-profit website that doesn't share proceeds with any of the teams being filmed <_<

The D1 race had ideal weather (55 degrees at 9:40) and 4 boys with the fitness to break 15:00, but the first mile was "tactical" and went out in 4:50 with the top kids not wanting to push the pace. They were actually racing, not time-trialing, which was nice to see.

The D2 race had ideal weather (57 degrees at 10:10)and 1 boy with the fitness to break 15:00, but he was racing to win as well and did what he had to for the state title.

The D3 race had warmer than ideal weather (65 degrees at 12:20 - an 8 second penalty for the top boys, equivalent to running 3200 feet higher in elevation than the D1 and D2 races) and 4 boys with the fitness to break 15:00. These guys knew they had to get out fast if they wanted any shot at advancing to NXN. Weather adjusted times (http://www.runsmartproject.com/calculator/) show the top boys should be expected to have been "penalized" about 8-9 seconds versus the temps of the D1 and D2 races.

The D4 race had slightly warmer than ideal weather (62 degrees at 11:15 - a 4 second penalty for the top boys) and 1 boy with the fitness to break 15:00, but he was racing "alone".

The D5 race had warmer than ideal weather (67 degrees at 1:25 - an 11 second penalty for the top boy) and 1 boy with the fitness to break 15:00, but he was racing "alone" as well.

11 boys with the fitness to break 15:00, but separated into 5 different races. 3 of those boys ran "alone", and 6 of them ran in less ideal conditions than the other 5.

It's a little bit disappointing to me that the state meet doesn't take the same format as we see in track, where the best teams and individuals compete against one another regardless of division.

Crazy-good stuff going on in California. As hard as kids have worked just to qualify for the CIF state meet, is anyone still feeling fresh and ready to peak?

I am big cross country fan and ran both courses Mt. Sac and killer hill (Woodward Park). When you mentioned Woodward slower by 16-18 seconds and the course is 284 meters longer than Mt. Sac and no one ran under under 15 minutes last year. Who do think will hit that? Very tough course............

It is a tough course, but Mt. Sac is hillier so you can't do a straight distance conversion. I think anyone who's run about 14:40 or so at Mt. Sac has a decent shot at going under. I know we haven't seen it in a couple years, but look at the 2010 State Meet:

Moussa, Ammar (2011) Arcadia 14:43
Urie, Ryan (2011) Henry 14:45
Werley, Lane (2011) M.L.King 14:46
Gedyon, Elias (2011) Loyola 14:52
Albertson, C.J. (2012) Buchanan 14:51
Durham, Kevin (2012) El Toro 14:55

Six guys went under in 2010 - and I think we have a stronger group of boys up front this year. If conditions are right, we could see this many go under 15:00 or more.

Sub 15 at Woodward park state meet? You kidding me maybe three kids TOPS will go under that! This is not the mt Sac. Course 2.93 miles. If any kid from the SS goes under that my hats down to them. Good luck!

I didn't mean to imply that it is a comparable course or that the numbers would be similar. Woodward Park is about 16-18 seconds slower on average. That said, I think there will be more than on sub 15's, just not sure how many.

Yeah I was there in person. All of the races were crazy fast.

Thanks for putting that together.

With the top team times seeming to primarily come in the past several years for the boys and girls, and the top individual times mostly consisting of performances in the last several years I've come to the conclusion that Einstein's Theory of Relativity must be accurate. Once the kids hit a certain velocity the clocks are clearly slowing down. How else could it be explained? :D
